Send lawyers, guns and mediators: what songs would be on your mediation playlist?
Posted by: Diane Levin in Mediation, Popular Culture, Politics, Society, Random Musings
On the ABA Journal Daily News web site, the Question of the Week asks “Which Songs Would You Choose for a Lawyer’s Playlist?”
A few of the usual suspects are suggested, including “Lawyers, Guns and Money” by the immortal Warren Zevon.
In time for Friday and the weekend, here’s a proposed playlist for mediators. (And no, “Kumbaya” does not make the cut. Not on my list, pal.)
- Walk a Mile in My Shoes, Joe South
- We Can Work It Out, John Lennon and Paul McCartney
- Put Down That Weapon, Midnight Oil
- (What’s So Funny) ‘Bout Peace, Love and Understanding, written by Nick Lowe and performed by Elvis Costello
- Why Can’t We Be Friends, War
- Let’s Work Together, Canned Heat
And, of course, INXS’s “Mediate“:
What’s on your mediator’s playlist?

Now you’ve gone and done it. I don’t know why I never became an entertainment lawyer, as much as I love music. I’m working up a huge list. I’ll post it on my site and link back to this post (if I can figure out how with that trackback function).

Diane:
When I started my mediation practice I was pumped up about setting up a mediation room in my office. I saw a framed photograph of Mick Jagger and bought it for my mediation room, on the theory that “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” would be a good touchstone for clients. When I got back to my office and showed it to a colleague and asked her what she thought, she said, “I Can’t Get No Satisfaction.” Needless to say, the photo hangs in a different room.
Best,
Nancy
P.S. Just catching up on my blog reading over this three day weekend.

As I frequently sing to our cat, Nate, as he pounces on our other cat, Sophie,
“All we are saying, is give peace a chance.”
I think I should branch out to “Imagine.” Thank you John Lennon.
